I imagined her as Catherine Earnshaw from Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights , struggling to fit in a society where everything is decided for you. Imagine a city where birdsongs and children's laughter have replaced the noise of cars. This city exists, and it's called Strasbourg. Although I'm biased when talking about Strasbourg, it's a town close to my heart, where I lived for nearly ten years. I left when the city started to transform. I remember the massive uproar about destroying old chestnut trees along the place de la République to reinstall the tramway. The crazy thing was that Strasbourg had a tramway from 1878 until 1960, when the French government decided that cars were the future and replaced all the trams with polluting buses. To the point that the Cathédrale was under threat from the pollution. How wrong could they be? The tramway came back in 1994 and since the city has made considerable changes to eradicate cars from the city centre. It was a bold move which created a lot of anger and concerns about the shops in the city. But a delight to walk in a city where you are free to wander without constantly having to make way for cars. You uncover new sounds like birds' songs and children's laughter. Then, on the passerelle de l'Abreuvoir, you cross the path of dads commuting to work with their children on the back of the bicycle, and the way of life has suddenly taken a slower pace on the Rue du Vieux-Marché-Aux-Poissons. Walking around the old city centre is a pure delight. There are moments to enjoy walking along the River, watching the passers on their bicycle, walking, and jogging. Everyone seems to be smiling and with no stress about getting to their destination. I wish more cities would adopt this way of life, and Strasbourg has proved it is possible.
